We Need Vision
WE NEED VISION
We need a vision for something new and better and more alive in our political culture and we need it badly. If we recognize that the situation is critical, that Capitol Hill is Ground Zero, then we need vision to carry us through the pain towards where we are headed. Indeed, we need to know where we are headed.
“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
This is how the story ends. Or rather, it’s how it begins, compared to all that is ahead.
We have work to do to bring healing to the nations, because the nations need healing. That includes us, every person on Capitol Hill, to both receive healing, and to give healing. To do so, we need to tap into a spirit of liberty more ancient than America’s founding, fuller than we have yet imagined, and more alive than the sleepy and worn out campaigns we like to think will restore America to be the hope of the earth.
The Truth, like a lightning bolt ripping into a dark sky, came to set us free. The Truth calls us to follow, and as we reconnect our concept of liberty to the actual reality of liberty, we can creatively pursue Truth and Beauty in our work.
This journey won’t be easy, but we can begin by returning to the source of our calling and strength. Pray “break my heart for what breaks yours,” and “take me deeper than my feet could ever wander” and you’ll suddenly be led into a great adventure, knowing there’s no going back now.
If we catch a glimpse of the magnitude of our brokenness, the grandness of forgiveness, and the reckless, eternal joy that’s coming, it really will change everything. It means we can view creativity and the development of it as the core of why any workplace exists. It means we can engage with absolutely anyone at any time, because at rock bottom what everyone is desperately trying to find is the great adventure of liberty for which we were created – even our so-called political enemies.
We can just offer a vision for what we want to accomplish and why and rest knowing there is a hope for the world greater than the American ideal of liberty. And it means that in our work we can care for the humanity of the people around us without becoming less than human to prove we can achieve an air of significance that will quickly blow away.
There is much work to do still to develop the idea that our work can be a creative pursuit of truth and beauty, and over time we will. We repeat the phrase often because we have to evaluate what we are pursuing and begin to let deep truth touch us inside, so our lives can be restored to the beauty they were meant to reflect.
Imagine a Capitol Hill where it is a joy to enter into debate in search of truth, where offices have such clearly defined objectives that creative potential is grown and pursued daily to achieve them, and where staffers instead of cycling through burnout, cycle through a constant process of creating and refining. Imagine a Capitol Hill where the citizens of a great country gather to form a government, not driven by fear but by a simple idea that changes everything: LIBERATUS—we are set free.
